Weingut Bastgen, Blauschiefer Riesling Trocken

The Weingut Bastgen property was founded in 1850 and is located in the tiny hamlet of Monzel, along the middle Mosel. The current owners are husband and wife team Armin Vogel and Mona Bastgen who began working in the winery in 1993. The average total production is 3,300 cases.

They meticulously tend 4.5 ha (11.11 acres) of which 80% is Riesling. The soil is characterized by blue to anthracite-coloured slate. Their vineyards are located in Kesten and Brauneberg, on a steep terrace, and planted to 50-year old vines. Fortunately for Bastgen, they own part of the famous Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr. The vines produce very small, ripe berries that are very tasty.

The Vineyard operates Organic viticulture which preserves the vitality in the vineyard and provides a foundation for genuine wines. We limit ourselves to the finest grapes, natural yeasts, and naturally occuring sulfites. Conventionally managed vineyards resemble a plantation; they are more of a production space than a living environment. In our organically managed vineyards, life abounds. Here, careful manual work counts.

The Blauschiefer Riesling Trocken is bright, clean, fresh and zesty. Passionfruit and grapefruit like flavours abound on the nose. The palate has ripe citrus, mouthwatering acidity and a nice minerality, typical of the Riesling grape grown on blue slate soil. Round, rich and a very long finish.
