Quinta do Pôpa, Contos da Terra Tinto

Quinta do Pôpa  are a family run estate, founded by José Ferreira and named in honour of his father, Francisco ‘Pôpa’ Ferreira. José (aka Zeca do Pôpa) bought vineyards in 2003. Situated on slopes in Adorigo and Tabuaço, overlooking the Douro River, these vineyards are a mix of old vines (some over 80 years old) and new, with many classic Douro varieties. The business is now co-owned and lead by the third generation, the siblings Stéphane and Vanessa Ferreira

Quinto do Pôpa released its first vintage in 2007, before working with well-known producer Luís Pato in 2009 to develop the house style. The wines are certified sustainable, and in the process of becoming organic.

The vineyards of Baixo and Cima Corgo have an altitude up to 500m and are on schist soils. The grapes were carefully handpicked during manual harvesting and underwent meticulous pre-selection. They were transported in 20 kg boxes to maintain their quality. In the cellar, the grapes were completely de-stemmed and gently crushed into stainless steel vats, where alcoholic and malolactic fermentation occurred spontaneously under temperature-controlled conditions. Aged in steel for 10 months.

The Contos de Terra Tinto is a blend of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Barroca.

Ripe fruited nose, bursting with cherry, cinnamon and a vanilla-chocolate touch. With ripe tannins on the palate of black and red cherry, plums and a touch of chalky minerality. Generous and fruity.
