Moscato d’Asti, G D Vajra

The Vajra family is based in the small village of Vergne, which sits above the town of Barolo on the westernmost edge of the denomination. They have 10 hectares of Barolo vineyard planted along this western part of the zone, the prime site being Bricco delle Viole, which sits at over 400 metres above sea level. The elevation and westerly orientation make this vineyard an exceptional cru, as it benefits from the cool breezes that flow from the mountains to the west, as well as from morning and evening sun. The style of wine from this site, scented yet ripe, supple yet with great ageing potential, sets the template for the rest of the Vajra wines.

Aldo and his wife, Milena, are now joined in this family venture by their children Giuseppe, Francesca and Isidoro. The youngest, Isidoro, works with Aldo to manage the vineyard while Giuseppe looks after the winery and Francesca administration, visits and everything else there is to do in a property this size.

Aldo grows his Moscato grapes in the ‘Riforno’ vineyard in the Comune of Mango, in the Moscato d’Asti zone. It is a south facing, 2.5 hectare vineyard planted at the top of a very steep slope, at 420-470 metres above sea level. The vines are trained in mixed Guyot system and were planted between 1986-2007.

The Moscato harvest began at the end of August and picking is based on each individual site. But Aldo always provides some extra days of ripening for this variety to develop intense aromatics and flavour. Following harvest, the fruit was brought to the winery as quickly as possible where the grapes immediately underwent a very gentle pressing. Fermentation was carried out in small batches to provide the brightest, and most enticing aromas to each bottle.

The Moscato d’Asti is certified organic and vegan friendly. The wine has delicate aromas of tropical fruits, orange blossom, apple, and lemon. The palate is well balanced and clean with lively acidity and delicate bubbles.
