David Lefort worked for several years in Burgundy, with Bruno Lorenzon and Clos de Tart, before acquiring plots of Mercurey Premier Cru in 2010, followed in 2013 and 2014 by vines in Rully. Certified organic since 2013, this experienced winemaker uses biodynamic methods in his vineyards, for very modest yields. Long macerations, 18 months of long ageing in barrels (never more than 30% new barrels) and concrete eggs, as well as a high proportion of whole grapes create a demanding and very personal style of wine, with reds with pulpy textures and ripe and fresh whites.
The Mercurey 1er Cru, Clos l’Evêque seduces with its great finesse of texture: sappy, nuanced, unvarnished, it combines depth of flesh and freshness of fruit, and will age gracefully, with an extraordinary length.
The nose combines fruity notes of raspberry and cherry with beguiling floral fragrances. With a swish of the glass liquorice and violet appear as well as scents of spices, roasting and toasted touches. Moving towards aromas of ground coffee, toffee and rolled cigar wrappers. On the palate, it’s very young. The attack is full with a lot of flesh and intense fruity expressions. The cherry, mulberry and wild strawberry fruit has density and is concentrated with a taut quality, and felted, polished tannins. The finish is swathed in coffee grounds and tobacco and is very long.
Lots of virile potential and benefits from decanting in its youth. The wine will cellar well for 5-7 years.
