Glenelly Estate is owned by May de Lencquesaing, former owner of Bordeaux’ Château Pichon-Lalande, Glenelly offers a Bordeaux-inspired structure with fine New World richness. “Lady May” is Glenelly’s flagship estate wine. The vineyard is located on the southern slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain.
The Lady May is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc & 4% Petit Verdot aged for 24 months in new French oak barrels, hand picked, wild yeast ferment in tank
The grapes were hand-picked and lightly crushed before being transferred into stainless steel tanks. Fermentation occurred naturally, with extraction carefully managed by limiting pump-overs to a maximum of two per day. Following fermentation, the wine remained in contact with the skins for an additional 2-3 weeks. It was then matured for a total of 24 months in 300L French oak barrels. Initially, the wine spent 12 months aging as individual components in 30-40% first-fill barrels. Subsequently, after blending, it was returned to 75% first-fill barrels for an additional 12 months.
The nose opens with fragrant ripe dark fruits with a touch of violet and mineral flashes. Tea leaf, roast beef and thyme notes contrast intense raspberry and blueberry aromas. This wine is lush, silky and powerful with chewy tannins and a silky, savoury finish. Ripe black fruit, cocoa with a smoky vanilla hint on the finish. Seamless oak gives a hint of spice, and support for the medium to full body. The Lady May will cellar for over 15 years.
