Domaine La Lauzeta produces some fabulous organic wines from St Chinian. Established in 2015 by Tom Hills, with winemaker Florian Bruneau, this was a true ‘Garagista’ wine maker which now has a small winery in the village of Saint-Nazaire-de-Ladarez. Tom bought two old vineyards to create Domaine La Lauzeta, and immediately began organic conversion. He has quickly gained recognition, and his wines are listed on 17 Michelin starred restaurants in France.
Mezura 2016 is a big, brooding blend of 60% Syrah, 25% Grenache, 15% Carignan grown on schist from very low yielding vineyards. In organic and biodynamic conversion, bottled unfined and unfiltered.
The nose is really enticing with wafts of iodine and pencil lead over crushed blackberries. Pure dark fruit dominates on the palate – blackberry, black currant and black cherry. Nicely integrated with good bottle age, it is silky with a divine lift on the finish.
