DeLoach Winery, Russian River, Pinot Noir

The DeLoach winery and vineyards were originally owned and run by Cecil and Christine De Loach. In 2003, the family run Burgundian estate Jean-Claude Boisset purchased De Loach and brought the focus back to the estate’s original high-quality winemaking philosophy, with specific emphasis on small lot winemaking, particularly of Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley. The winery’s 7-hectare estate vineyard has been completely restored and converted to organic and biodynamic viticulture, a tradition upheld by many foremost Burgundian vineyards.

The DeLoach estate vineyards are certified organic by CCOF. Sourced from the certified Sonoma Sustainable BCD Vineyard, the sustainably-farmed Heintz Vineyard and the organic and Demeter Certified DeLoach Estate, each of these Russian River Valley vineyards contribute their unique complexities to the final blend. The BCD Vineyard consists of five distinct blocks within the vineyard with soils varying from Huichica clay loam to heavier clay found in some of the lower lying portions of the vineyard. Located in the town of Occidental, the Heintz Vineyard is located in the Green Valley sub AVA and is planted to four distinct clones. The Swan and Pommard clones have traditionally provided a concentrated mouthfeel and earthy characteristics to the wines made from the vineyard, while the 113 and Beringer clones bring more spice and tannic intensity to the wines.

Crafted using traditional Burgundian techniques, the grapes were hand sorted then fermented in small vats with manual punchdowns for gentle extraction of tannins. The wine was aged for 15 months in French oak barrels (15% new) to create a complex, multi-layered Pinot Noir.

The DeLoach Russian River Pinot Noir is a beautiful ruby colour with a welcoming bouquet of vanilla-tinged black cherry and mulberry fruits, with subtle notes of herbs. Plum and blackberry flavours are met with a touch of chocolate, tea and spice, and well balanced by a bright acidity. It’s a medium-bodied wine with moderate tannins and lingering and mouthwatering finish.
