CV 17 50 Champagne NV, Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs, Valentin Leflaive

Olivier Leflaive is part of one of Burgundy’s most iconic dynasties. He co-ran Domaine Leflaive for over a decade, including four years in collaboration with his cousin, the late, great Anne-Claude. So when he expanded into Champagne it was only to be expected that these wines would be thrilling and dynamic. Champagne Valentin Leflaive (named after Olivier’s son) couples a modern and transparent approach that will appeal to inquisitive types, with the kind of provenance, reputation and expertise that are sure to pique the interest of true connoisseurs.

Champagne Valetin Leflaive’s vegan-friendly wines are given codes, rather than names. These indicate the year and origin of the base, and also the dosage (the sweetness added to balance the Champagne). So, Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs CV 17 50 is a pure Chardonnay based on wines harvested in the 2017 vintage (17) from the Grand Cru of Cramant (C) and the Premier Cru of Vertus (V), finished with a dosage of 5.0g/l (50). It was disgorged in the summer of 2021, following four years (four times longer than required by law for a non-vintage Champagne) ageing on the lees (the spent yeast that gives top sparkling wine its bready and nutty flavour profile).

The result is like Grand Cru Chablis with bubbles. Rich and aromatic with dazzling precision and dizzying complexity, this is a stunning introduction to Champagne Valentin Leflaive.
