Anwilka Vineyards is located in Stellenbosch’s prime Helderberg ward. Affectionately known as ‘the Golden Triangle’ thanks to its specific microclimate and diverse soil types that produce some of the world’s best red wines, the Helderberg stretches from the edge of Stellenbosch to Somerset West. Anwilka is a mere 7km from the ocean and comprises almost 40 hectares of vineyards, now planted with mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
Anwilka is from renowned Stellenbosch property Anwilka Vineyards, which merged with Klein Constantia Estate in mid-2012. The name is a tribute to Anwilka’s French heritage owed to co-owners Hubert de Boüard and Bruno Prats, both of whom are now shareholders in Klein Constantia and Anwilka. Under their expert guidance, Anwilka is celebrated both locally and internationally for the consistent, superior quality wines it produces.
2019 was a warm summer followed by a cooler maturation period allowed for optimal grapes with intense flavour. It was a vintage that was made entirely in the vineyards, allowing the winemakers to guide and preserve the essence of what the vines had to offer.
The grapes for the 2019 were hand-picked in small crates. Sorting occurred before and after destemming. Alcoholic fermentation took place in stainless steel tronconic tanks. Lengthy pump-overs and extended maceration ensured a gentle extraction of ripe polyphenols. The wine spent total of 20 months in wood, 50% new French Oak 400 litre barrels, the remaining 50% in 2nd fill.
A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Syrah.
The Anwilka shows dark red fruit and a delicate oak spice burst on the nose, followed by a floral perfume with red peppercorn and smoked dried meats. The wine is concentrated and bold with great complexity and balance. There are soft herbal essences, black tea and olive notes. The palate is driven by grippy tannins and dark fruit, with pencil shavings across the mid palate. This wine is elegantly structured. A full bodied and long finish ensures that this wine will age beautifully. Drink 2024 – 2035
