Chateau Caronne Ste. Gemme has been in the hands of the same family since 1900. The vineyard is in the Haut-Medoc, just inland from Saint-Julien, and has a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are classic traditionally-styled Bordeaux, with a good capacity for ageing. Plantings consist of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot and the average vine age is 25 years. Chateau Caronne Ste Gemme Haut Medoc is produced on an isolated estate on the Southern Border of Saint Laurent. Caronne Ste Gemme means St James’s Spring or small spring.
Caronne Ste Gemme are really reliable wine makers and produce consistently good wines. The 2018 is a superb wine which spends 15 months in oak 20% of which is new oak. Stylish dark and structured with undertones of leather and liquorice. Generally a dark firm wine – this vintage is an open fruity vintage and this wine has some age and is becoming extremely good full and expressive. Superb and drinking really well now. Still relatively young, but from a good vintage, this really delivers. Important to decant at this stage.
