Château Caronne Ste Gemme 2015, Haut-Medoc

Chateau Caronne Ste. Gemme has been in the hands of the same family since 1900. The vineyard is in the Haut-Medoc, just inland from Saint-Julien, and has a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are classic traditionally-styled Bordeaux, with a good capacity for ageing. Plantings consist of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot and the average vine age is 25 years.

Caronne Ste Gemme are really reliable wine makers and produce consistently good wines. The 2015 has a pleasant, rather dark fruited nose with a touch of iodine. The palate is medium-bodied and balanced. Quite meaty, upfront fruit with a vanilla touch from the oak; long, textured tannins, and a balancing acidity. Still relatively young, but from a great vintage, this really delivers. Important to decant at this stage.
