Bodegas Urbina Reserva Especial, Rioja 2006

Bodegas Benito Urbina is a family-owned single estate winery situated in Cuzcurrita de Río Tirón, on the north-western edge of Rioja Alta. They only release their wines when they are happy and the 2001 has only been available since 2014.

2006, considered to be a very good vintage in Rioja, has allowed Urbina to produce a very classic wine which has developed beautifully in the bottle. The 2001 was always going to be a very hard act to follow, but the 2006 is a worthy successor. A blend of 95% Tempranillo, 5% Mazuelo and Graciano. Aged 18 months in American oak casks (12 months in new oak and 6 months in 7 year old oak casks) and a minimum of 12 months in bottle before release.

Black cherry, red berry and plum fruit on the nose, with a deft touch of oak giving truffle, tobacco and leather notes. These follow through to the palate, which is medium bodied, well balanced with a structured, lengthy and complex finish. A round, silky and smooth wine with a voluptuous, sweet middle palate with delicious ripe berry and mature fruits. Refreshing acidity, elegant, complex and classy.
