Set against the backdrop of the majestic Pisa mountain range, Amisfield is one of the largest single estate vineyards in Central Otago. Spurred on by fond memories of childhood holidays in Central Otago, Amisfield founder John Darby was determined to master this breathtaking yet often unforgiving high country, convinced that this dramatic landscape presented the perfect environment for cool-climate viticulture.
After an exhaustive search he discovered Amisfield Farm, formerly a merino sheep station. The first vines were planted in 1999 and they continue to thrive in this continental climate with its cold winters, hot summers and low rainfall. In 2021 we completed the 5 year process of converting all of our Estate to organic viticulture and were named as Organic Vineyard of the Year 2020 and again in 2022 as part of that process.
Planted on a combination of Lochar stony gravels located on the tope terrace above the winery and shallow sandy loam soils on the flats below. 25% fermented in large oak barrels. Aged on the lees for 4 months to incorporate a textural element to the wine.
A fresher style of Pinot Gris this year. Cool growing conditions helped retain bright green pear and red apple fruit aromatics, with a touch of ginger and spice from a portion of barrel fermentation. The palate shows similar flavours, matched to a fine acidity that draws out the length. A gentle ripe sweetness balances the finish.
